About Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones is an adjunct professor with Tarrant County College. Natively from Ohio, Jones has been developing his professional practice in Dallas, Texas, for over a decade. His work employs traditional compositions with contemporary themes in order to critique humanity’s relationship to the environment. He does this by painting on unorthodox materials. Tire fragments, recycled paper, reclaimed wood, and recycled plastic have all been used as supports to articulate our separation from the natural spaces that were once widely held as sacred. Recently Jones has been investigating our fixation on documenting where we are instead of absorbing the experience. This habit of ours, which has been problematic for generations, is now endemic in the age of social media influencers. He sees his work as an opportunity to inspire others to return to the wild spaces, and rediscover the meditative power that once captivated the masses. Jones has exhibited in dozens of group shows, has had 11 solo exhibitions, and has exhibited internationally. He is currently an artist in residence at the Cedar’s Union Art Incubator in Dallas, Texas.
