About Session

In this live demonstration, Amanda will share how her creative process often begins by working intuitively and creating many small fragments that are later incorporated into larger works. Using plaster of Paris on plastic and cardboard, she will demonstrate how these textured elements develop through layered materials and surface exploration.

Participants will see how embedded materials and shifting textures grow into what Amanda refers to as a personal material library, fragments that carry texture, memory, and possibility. She will also demonstrate when and how natural materials such as eggshells, instant coffee, pepper, natural sea sponge, sand, sage, dental floss and more are incorporated into the surface to create layered textures and subtle surface history.

Inspired by the philosophy of wabi sabi, this approach embraces imperfection, change, and the beauty that emerges through time and material interaction. Attendees will leave with new ideas for experimenting with texture, embedding natural materials, and creating fragments that can later be incorporated into larger encaustic works.
