In this demonstration, I’ll share accessible line-based approaches that can bring fresh energy to encaustic work at any stage. Through incised, carved, and transferred marks, line can introduce movement, rhythm, and spontaneity—whether you’re beginning a new piece or reviving one that feels unresolved.

We’ll explore how both additive and subtractive lines create contrast and intention within encaustic surfaces, offering structure in conversation with more organic forms. Small shifts in pressure, scale, and placement can dramatically change the tone of a piece, allowing line to move from subtle and playful to bold and assertive.

I’ll demonstrate a range of tools and materials that are integral to my studio practice, including carving implements, transfer papers (including some sparkly ones), and other unexpected options. You’ll see how these techniques can be layered and combined to create nuanced, expressive encaustic surfaces.
