Wondering about washi? For thousands of years, paper making has been an honoured profession in Japan. Some paper makers carry on the age-old practices and techniques of their ancestors, often in the same studios using the same methods. Others have turned to more mechanized systems. Both rely on the inherent characteristics of the fibres used to produce washi — Japanese paper.

We will share some of the history and techniques unique to paper making in Japan; describe the differences between the three main fibres used, kozo, mitsumata, and gampi; show examples of artwork created using washi; and help you know how to choose the best washi for your project.
