This presentation explores the use of fabric as a sculptural and textural element in contemporary encaustic practice. Moving beyond the flat surface, the talk focuses on how different types of fabric can be integrated into wax-based layers to create expressive relief, volume, and depth.

The presentation addresses which fabrics are most suitable for working with encaustic media, how their structure and density influence the final surface, and what kinds of sculptural and relief effects can be achieved—from subtle textures to pronounced, plastic forms. Special attention is given to the balance between control and unpredictability when working with wax and textile materials.

Using examples from her own work, the artist demonstrates how fabric can be embedded into a prepared encaustic surface and transformed into an integral part of the composition. The live demonstration shows the process of creating a sculptural fabric-based element using encaustic medium and wax paints, and integrating it seamlessly into an existing encaustic background.

Rooted in the artist’s long-term mixed media and encaustic practice, this presentation reflects an authorial approach in which texture functions as a carrier of meaning and layers act as metaphors for inner experience. The session offers both technical insight and conceptual perspective for artists interested in expanding the material and sculptural possibilities of encaustic painting.
