About Session

Methods for using bone, metal, ceramics, and unprimed wood

As a visual artist I find myself responding to materials and inspired by what they may become as subjects and art. This illustrated talk will review typical substrates but focus on metal, bone, and unprimed wood as substrates and additions for 2D and 3D works. It will cover how to secure wood, bones, and metal elements in encaustic work. Examples of work using bone (skulls) as the substrate will be included. Limitations of ceramics and plastic will be reviewed. Surprising sources of unprimed wood will be shared. This talk is meant to engage artists with new ideas for both substrates and additive options.
